Construction on Dr. Phillips Center will close roads in downtown Orlando this weekend

ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - One lane of South Street will be closed from Rosalind Avenue to Orange Avenue over the weekend as crews at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts install its iconic roof over the new Steinmetz Hall.

Crews installed a crane at the intersections of South Street and Magnolia Avenue. On Saturday at 10 a.m. they will install the largest section of the art center’s iconic cantilever roof.

Officials at the Dr. Phillips Center said crews will use two cranes to lift the 142 ton roof and then it will be flown atop Steinmetz Hall and attached to the existing canopy roof.

The lane is expected to be back open by 5 p.m. Sunday. Performances at the center this weekend will continue as scheduled. People who are attending performances this weekend should check their emails for parking and driving updates.

“We’ve been watching the construction for the past 8 weeks. It’s exciting to see,” said Karen Jo Flood Gates. “I can’t wait to go to the theater and see what it’s going to be like when it’s done.”

Construction on Steinmetz Hall and the Green Room will be complete in summer 2020.

Last week, the Dr. Phillips Center celebrated its topping out. Crews laid a two ton beam on top of the construction, signifying the completion of phase two. Officials said when the 1,700 seat theater is finished it will be the most acoustically-sound venue in the world.
