VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - A 41-year-old man was arrested after authorities say he stole a car from a woman stopped at a red light and reached speeds of up to 137 mph during a pursuit through Volusia County. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Scott Taylor.
New Smyrna Beach police officers and the Florida Highway Patrol helped arrest Taylor on Thursday after authorities say he drove into oncoming traffic, crashed into two vehicles and fled on foot along State Road 44.
The backstory:
Deputies said Taylor was already being pursued by Florida Highway Patrol troopers on Interstate 95 when he entered Volusia County.
Investigators said Taylor first tried unsuccessfully to carjack one person before stealing a vehicle from a woman stopped at a red light near Destination Daytona.
License plate-reading cameras detected the stolen vehicle and alerted law enforcement that it was traveling east on State Road 44, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies pursued Taylor as he reached speeds of up to 137 mph, authorities said. Investigators said he eventually drove into oncoming traffic. Body camera footage shows a New Smyrna Beach officer attempting to deploy stop sticks as Taylor traveled on State Road 44 near Ocean Gate Boulevard.
Taylor later crashed into two vehicles near the Interstate 95 overpass, police said. Investigators said he then tried to force his way into another vehicle before running from the scene.
No injuries to motorists or officers were reported during the arrest, according to authorities.
What's next:
Taylor faces a fleeing charge from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the Florida Highway Patrol and Ormond Beach Police Department are expected to file additional charges.
