WWII-era device removed from home by bomb squad

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - What was thought to be a World War II-era explosive device caused a few moments of panic in a Hunters Creek neighborhood on Tuesday.

A man cleaning out his deceased father's home noticed a box containing what appeared to be some sort of military-grade ordinance. The man's late father apparently served in the military.  The man called the Orange County Sheriff's Office at 3:30 p.m. to dispose of the device.

The Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad was sent to the scene and determined the device was inert -- it was an empty artillery shell.  

Several homes surrounding 14354 Lord Barclay Drive were evacuated while the Bomb Squad evaluated the device.  The scene was cleared around 5:30 p.m..
