Winter Springs school feeding families with student garden

Seeds went in the ground two years ago at Winter Springs Elementary. The school's garden club planted its first crops in raised-beds. A few tomato plants here, a few bell pepper plants there. It was an effort to teach kids about gardening.

However, Winter Springs Elementary is a Title I school, and 79 percent of students here get free or reduced lunch. Jane Millen runs the food pantry at the school. It sends canned and other grocery goods home to 80 of the school's families every weekend. Millen saw the garden and decided to find a way to use it to send fresh produce home to some of those family's too.
