Volusia County sheriff's deputies getting raises

Deputies with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office are about to make a lot more money -- some will soon bank 13 to 25 percent more than they are making now.

Even base pay will jump four percent a year, for the next three years.  Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the raises were a long time coming, adding that some will close major pay gaps, where more experience law enforcement officers are getting paid less that others.

"We've probably had a dozen police officers from other parts of the county and Central Florida who have said, 'Hey, when this contract gets ratified, a big reason we didn't want to come to work for the Volusia County Sheriff's Office was pay.'  You've just taken that hurdle away," said Sheriff Chitwood.

The agreement was approved by the Volusia County Council in a unanimous 7-0 vote.
