Trial begins for man accused of posting slain wife's photo on Facebook

MIAMI (AP) -- Trial is set to begin for a South Florida man accused of fatally shooting his wife and posting a photo of her body on Facebook.

Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday morning in the case of 33-year-old Derek Medina of South Miami.

He is charged with first-degree murder in the August 2013 slaying of his 27-year-old wife Jennifer Alfonso.

After the shooting, authorities say Medina uploaded a photo of Alfonso's body on Facebook and admitted to the killing.

Medina is claiming self-defense and that he was a battered spouse.

Prosecutors say the trial is expected to last about two weeks.

Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty, so Medina faces life in prison if convicted.

He has been jailed since his arrest.
