Tourism officials: No red tide in Volusia County
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Daytona Beach tourism officials are stressing that red tide is not present in Volusia County. There are concerns after tests confirmed that the harmful algal bloom has now reached the Space Coast, in neighboring Brevard County.
Experts say the toxic algae could be tracking northward at the same time as more than a hundred-thousand bikers come here for "Biketoberfest." Dave Brigen is visiting from New Port Richey and says he didn't know red tide was just a county away.
"I didn't know it was over on the Atlantic at all!" he said. "I like the Atlantic Ocean, like to go swimming in it -- the waves and all, as compared to the gulf."
Volusia County beach patrol officers are continuing to monitor the beaches daily.
