TIMELINE: System bringing wintry weather to South, heavy rain to Central Florida

Keep an umbrella handy! The same system that is bringing wintry weather across much of the southern United States is forecast to bring heavy rain to Central Florida.

The rain will start off light, but it will intensify throughout the overnight. Ice and snow is possible across North Florida. Orlando will see cold rain but the possibility of flurries in the late morning.

Ice forecast: Which parts of Florida could see the worst ice conditions?

Big picture view:

North Florida, near the I-10 corridor to the Florida and Georgia state line, has been hit by a wintry mix. Since temperatures will be colder across northern Florida, this means sleet and freezing rain will be possible, plus the chance of a few snow showers in North Central Florida.

Snow accumulations will be near one to two inches, possibly as far south as Alachua County. Ice accumulations will amount to around two-tenths of an inch as far south as Flagler, Lake, Marion, and Volusia counties.  Any ice on roadways will lead to hazardous driving conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Ice accumulation on tree limbs and power lines can also lead to power outages.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for parts of the Florida Panhandle, the Big Bend region, and northern, northwest, and northeast Florida, according to the National Weather Service.

Impacts could include power outages and tree damage due to the ice. Weather officials said travel could be nearly impossible, and the hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for parts of northern and northeast Florida due to the potential for light mixed precipitation on Wednesday morning, with a possibility of some ice accumulation.

Impacts could include hazardous conditions that may affect the Wednesday morning commute.

A Freeze Warning goes into effect from 12 a.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. for portions of northern and northeast Florida.

Timeline:

The freeze line will push into North Central Florida after midnight. The FOX 35 Storm Team is eying a zone from Ocala to Palm Coast and points north. Orlando could see a few snow flurries late Wednesday morning as the rain clears out.

Road conditions will be hazardous across much of North Florida and the Panhandle overnight and into Wednesday, so avoid travel or drive with caution.

Highs for Wednesday are expected to be in the mid to upper 40s and may not break above 50 in Orlando.

Rain chances will decrease through the afternoon on Wednesday with partly cloudy skies sticking around for the rest of the week.

Temperatures will remain well below normal for the rest of the week, before returning to the 70s by the end of the weekend as an area of high pressure moves in.
