Teen, 16, accused of beating couple with hammer, taking car

Police in Louisiana say a 16-year-old boy is accused of beating an 89-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife with a hammer in their home and stealing their car.

Kenner Police Chief Michael Glaser said in a news release Monday that the couple remained in critical condition, and the boy was in a detention center on charges of attempted murder, car theft and aggravated burglary. His name was withheld because he's a juvenile.

Glaser says a neighbor called 911 about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, saying his next-door neighbor was covered in blood and asking for help. Police say the woman gave investigators the teenager's name.

Detectives were at her house when Baton Rouge police reported the couple's car had crashed and the teen was detained.

Kenner is a suburb of New Orleans.
