Deadly wrong-way crash at Sand Lake Rd interchange

A 21-year-old man is dead after troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said he went the wrong way on a newly redesigned Sand Lake Road interchange with Interstate 4. The diverging diamond interchanged opened on Saturday.

Troopers are investigating a deadly, wrong-way crash on Interstate 4 in Orlando, officials said. 

On Tuesday, the crash happened around 5:30 a.m. on I-4 westbound at the exit ramp to Sand Lake Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 2016 Nissan Sentra, being driven by a 21-year-old man, was traveling the wrong way and struck the female driver of a 2011 Jeep Wrangler, officials said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. She was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, FHP said. 

The crash is under investigation.
