Aisle five of the Publix grocery store on Bee Ridge Road is a crime scene.

Yellow tape blocked shoppers from sugar, spices and other baking supplies.

Sarasota County Sheriffs deputies say a 57-year-old employee was stabbed just after 10 in the morning.

"He took a knife out and ended up stabbing her in the back of the neck," said Kaitlyn Johnston with the sheriff's office.

Deputies say Corey Scogin, 30, then began to hurt himself.

"He began stabbing himself as well. He has several self inflicted stab wounds," said Johnston.

After that, Scogin ran from the store toward the Beneva Ridge apartments a block away. Deputies said he ditched the knife at a tennis court.

"They had it taped off across," said Cameraron Coleman.

Coleman and his kids had just finished a game of basketball when deputies flooded the area.

"I told them you can't go anywhere right now because something is wrong," said Coleman.

They watched as an ambulance took Scogin to the hospital and were shocked by what happened.

"It is sad for one thing, but it really makes me scared for my kids, but not only my kids for my neighbors. We all walk to the Publix, we all walk to the Walmart, we all walk to the closest shopping centers around here," he said.

The Publix employee was released from the hospital and is expected to be okay. Scogin remains at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Once he is released he will be arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
