Ormond Beach motorcycle officer injured in crash

A motorcycle officer with the Ormond Beach Police Department has been transported by helicopter to a hospital after being involved in a crash.

The officer was a responding to a call on Wednesday afternoon and collided with a pick up truck traveling along Hand Ave., near the intersection with Clyde Morris Boulevard.

"The officer was responding with his emergency lights and siren on to a call of a suspicious person, armed with a gun, at 1425 Hand Avenue, when a white truck made a U-turn in front of him," said Keith Walker with the Ormond Beach Police Department. "The police motorcycle struck the driver’s door of the white truck." 

The unidentified officer, who was seriously injured in the crash, was flown by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office AIR ONE helicopter to Halifax Hospital.

"The officer’s condition is listed as a trauma alert. The driver of the white truck suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene," Walker added.

The Florida Highway Patrol is now investigating.
