Orange County high school honors the victims of 9/11 attack

The nation, including Central Florida, is remembering the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack this Tuesday. A tribute at an Orange County high school will be held that morning.

Students in Dr. Phillips High School's ROTC program will host the ceremony and welcome first responders from Orlando and Orange County today. Together, they will honor the men and women who served 17 years ago at the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

This year, a new way to honor just some of the victims of 9/11 is open in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. That is where the passengers of Flight 93 fought their hijackers and took down the plane that is believed to have been headed for the U.S. Capital. That memorial features a 93-foot tower with 40 wind chimes, one for each of the victims.

The coordinated attacks of September 11th also took the lives of thousands at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. For first responders, it was the single deadliest attack for first responders in the country's history.

The ceremony at Dr. Phillips High School is just one of many across the country. Thankfully, this year, we are able to mark the memorial again this year, as many of last year's events were postponed or canceled because of Hurricane Irma.
