North Florida man gets 50 years for ex-girlfriend's murder

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A north Florida man convicted of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

The Gainesville Sun reports that 34-year-old Alvin George Thomas was also sentenced Thursday to another 50 years for armed burglary, and 15 more for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors say Thomas killed 22-year-old Caitlin Albritton in late 2013 after she had broken off the relationship. Members of her family told the Sun that he had been stalking her prior to the slaying.

Police say Thomas shot Albritton at her apartment in Gainesville.

Thomas was charged with first-degree murder, but sentenced for second-degree murder after a plea agreement.
