Man accused of leaving children outside in cold weather

Robert Michael Klum is in the Seminole County Jail, charged with two counts of neglect of a child without bodily harm.

Klum is the boyfriend of the children's mother.  Investigators say they found his girlfriend's two young children shivering under a pink blanket on a lounge chair in the front lawn of a Casselberry home around 7:30 Wednesday morning.

The woman who lives in that home told investigators that Klum stopped by at 7:30 the night before.  The little girl was cold so she gave her a blanket and told Klum to take the children home to the Lake Kathryn motel, where they've been living, then closed the door and she went to bed.

Klum telling investigators he stayed with the children until about 9 p.m.  He told police he then ran across the street and hopped a fence and that he couldn't see the children due to lighting.  He thought he children had been picked up but never said who would have picked them up.  Temperatures were in the 40s that night.

The children's mom is at the Seminole County Jail too.  According to Jennifer Middendorf's arrest affidavit, she was taken into custody on Monday, charged with retail theft. Investigators say she stole Pepto Bismol and Gas-X from Publix and that's why her children were with Klum.

The children's biological father says he now has full custody of both of his young children and he's furious they were left outside, overnight in the cold.   The little boy also spoke to FOX 35.  He was in good spirits and said he was happy to be home with his dad.
