An officer attempted to de-escalate the situation by talking to the man, but according to the department, the man did not cooperate with the officer. Rather, the man's comments and actions seemed to indicate that he was provoking officers, Longwood Police said.
He hid his hands while police were talking with him and repeatedly claimed to be armed, the department said.
In a Jan. 16 statement, the department said the man pulled his hand from his waistband and raised it in a "hostile manner." He appeared to simulate drawing a gun, police said.
The department released its officer body camera footage of the incident, which shows the man lifting his shirt and holding up his hand over his head.
In response, an officer shot the man multiple times. The man continued to resist while he was being cuffed, the department said.
Officers gave the man first aid and called paramedics to the scene. The man was taken to a hospital for emergency surgery.
