Girl struck, killed while walking to school

A teenage girl was killed while walking to school in Daytona Beach.

Stephanie Boebert, 19, was walking to Mainland High School Monday morning after missing the bus. Volusia County school officials say Boebert was crossing an intersection at Nova Road and International Speedway Blvd, when she was hit.  She died at the scene.

Boebert's brother said his sister had a disability and should never had been out there in the first place.

"She really should have been taking the bus. We're really not sure why she was out there. We assume she missed the bus and decided to walk," said Michael Boebert.  "She's very tough, very strong will stubborn at times, had a lot of heart. Good person all around."

Boebert was in ROTC last year and participated in the Daytona Beach Police Department's "Shop with a Cop"  program.

"She was a big-hearted little girl, she was not about herself," said Jimmie Flynt, police spokesman.  "She wanted to buy her mom a necklace, and the school resource officer says, every morning she would find him and she would speak to him. That was they type of person that this little young girl was."

A statement sent to FOX 35 by Mainland High School read, "We are deeply saddened to lose this very special Buccaneer.  To day that our hearts are broken could only begin to describe the emptiness we now face each day without Stephanie."

The family has started a Go Fund Me account, to raise money for funeral expenses.
