DNA helps deputies solve 2-year-old carjacking case
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - DNA has helped deputies make an arrest in a nearly two-year-old carjacking case.
The suspect is already in jail in Polk County and is expected to be transferred to Volusia to answer to the carjacking charge.
Deputies say 21-year-old Corey Pittman is one of 3 men who shoved a woman out of her car and stole it back in July 2017.
It all started with a stolen, wrecked car on I-4 near Daytona Beach.
Volusia County Sheriff's deputies say a good Samaritan stopped to help after the crash, but 3 men jumped into her blue mustang, loading an unresponsive woman into the car and then took off.
Deputies found the unresponsive woman at a hospital.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood said while it took some time, they matched her DNA to both cars and got a DNA hit on Pittman, who is the injured woman's brother.
Chitwood said the forensic evidence paid off and hopes the arrest gives the victim closure.
"She can sleep a little bit better knowing that her good deed didn't go unpunished. Somebody is in jail for what he did for her."
The victim says she can rest a little bit easier now and appreciates deputies not giving up on her case.
