Deputies investigating death of 14-year-old

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office report that a shooting incident took the life of a 14-year-old boy on Saturday night.

Deputies say that they responded to a report of a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the neck around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night. The victim, Ernesto Sierra-Plummer, was transported to Florida Hospital New Smyrna, where he succumbed to his wound at 8:44 p.m.

Relatives of Sierra-Plummer were in the residence at the time of the shooting, but they told deputies that they did not witness the incident occur. Deputies did say though that two of his cousins reported hearing a gunshot and finding Sierra-Plummer shot in the neck.

Deputies say that one cousin also told deputies that Sierra-Plummer had a handgun in his hand. The other cousin reported that the 14-year-old shot himself.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, police say.
