Deputies: Brothers fight sparks shooting, 2 injured

JOEL ALMONTE

An argument between brothers sparked a shooting in Deltona Sunday afternoon.

Volusia County deputies have identified the shooter as Joel Almonte, 21, and the two victims as Almonte's brother, Gilbert Rivera, 28, and a friend Tilar Harris, 21.

Rivera suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and leg.

Harris was also injured in the arm and leg, but deputies say it was because of a ricochet bullet.

Deputies say the investigation revealed that Almonte and Rivera had been arguing throughout the day about Almonte being disrespectful to their mother.

The investigation revealed that Almonte and Rivera had been arguing throughout the day about Almonte being disrespectful to their mother.

At some point, Almonte told Rivera that if he didn't leave him alone, he would shoot him.

Rivera then retrieved his brother's rifle and handed it to him while in the garage, daring Almonte to shoot him.

Armed with the rifle, Almonte backed Rivera into a corner of the garage and then fired twice at close range, striking Rivera in the arm and leg.

Harris was also in the garage, but wasn't in the path of the shooting and was injured by a ricochet bullet.

Deputies say Almonte surrendered and was arrested.
