Dead fish wash ashore near Cape Canaveral
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - Dead fish were found washed ashore near Cape Canaveral. The fish kill has officials concerned because of the type of fish that died.
Hundreds of dead fish were found floating in the Indian river Lagoon near Cape Canaveral AIr Force station. Experts say that isolated fish kills like this are not unusual, but the fact that mostly red fish and sea trout were killed is strange.
The Indian River Esturary Program is unsure of the cause. They say a toxic algae bloom could be to blame. They also say the shallow, closed-off area of water could have been too hot with too little oxygen.
All this is happening as the west coast continues to battle red tide. Dead fish and dolphins are scattered along the coast. Governor Rick Scott just announced another $3 million to help fix the problem. Some business owners though say they may never recover.
