Cypress Creek HS teacher with cancer attempts 50-mile awareness walk

Rafael Martin set out from Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center at 6 a.m. He had more than 50 miles of walking ahead of him.

The Cypress Creek High School teacher is a cancer patient and still undergoing hormone treatments. Therefore, the task seemed daunting. The injections he takes come with severe fatigue.

However, it was a trek he says he had to make after losing several family members and friends to the disease. His goals were to get people talking about cancer, honor those who have died from it and raise money for the cancer center he says saved his life.
