EF2 tornado leaves path of destruction in Seminole County

Severe storms swept through Central Florida on Monday, bringing widespread impacts. A radar-confirmed tornado tore through Lake Mary and Longwood in Seminole County earlier in the morning. The EF2 tornado left a path of destruction over a roughly four-mile path.

The Brief

    • A radar-confirmed EF0 or EF1 tornado hit Lake Mary in Seminole County, leaving hundreds without power across Central Florida.
    • Duke Energy and FPL reported outages, with Seminole County being the hardest hit, while OUC reported no disruptions.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Severe storms swept through Central Florida on Monday, bringing widespread impacts. A radar-confirmed tornado tore through Lake Mary and Longwood in Seminole County earlier in the morning. The EF-2 tornado left a path of destruction over a roughly four-mile path.  

By mid-afternoon, storms had left thousands without power across the region.

At its peak, Duke Energy reported around 3,000 customers without power across Central Florida.

Suspected tornado hits FOX 35 while on air

A suspected tornado passed over Seminole County, including the WOFL FOX 35 TV Studios, on Monday morning, as a series of strong thunderstorms crossed over the area.

FPL

Florida Power and Light (FPL) reported over 100 customers without power in Central Florida due to the severe storms moving through the area. 

OUC 

OUC did not report any significant power outages in Orlando or the Orlando Metro area. 

Power Outage Safety Tips

Ready.gov shared the following tips when dealing with a power outage:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors and away from windows.
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power-dependent medical devices.
  • Check with local officials about heating and cooling locations open near you.
