A family got swept into the water off the California coast, resulting in a 7-year-old girl and her dad both dying and her mom being taken to the hospital.

What we know:

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a call of a family being swept into the Pacific Ocean near Garrapata State Park a little after 12:45 p.m. on Friday, November 14.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, 39-year-old Yuji Hu jumped into the water after his 7-year-old daughter got caught in the powerful waves. As the dad tried to save her, both family members got carried farther out to sea, deputies say.

The girl's mother jumped into the ocean in hopes of saving them but was also taken by the strong surf. She eventually got out of the water, but was later taken into the hospital for possible hypothermia.

The dad was eventually pulled back to shore and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. On Sunday, November 16, a diver found the 7-year-old girl's body "roughly 100 yard offshore and about a half mile north of the child's last known location," according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Officials later confirmed it was the missing 7-year-old girl's body.

The girl's mother has since been released from the hospital, deputies say.

During the earlier stages of the girl's disappearance, officials believed she was 5 years old, but family members at the scene later corrected deputies and told them she was 7.

What we don't know:

Officials have not released the identity of Hu's daughter.

It is also unknown how the family ended up getting swept into the water just off Monterey County, California.
