Boy missing after being knocked into the St. Johns River

EAST PALATKA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities are searching for a 9-year-old boy who was knocked from a boat while fishing in northeast Florida.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says the boy and a 50-year-old man were knocked into the St. Johns River on Saturday evening when wake from a larger boat hit their 14-foot vessel.

Capt. Joseph Wells tells The Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1D1WeHm ) that the man tried to help the boy but lost him as he drifted to shore. He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

No foul play is suspected. Wells says it's not clear whether the man or the boy were wearing life vests.

The names of the missing boy and the man fishing with him have not been released.
