Are your taxes done? Marlene Tirado got hers done in January.

“As soon as we get all the papers, we do it,” she said.

For everyone dragging their feet, the deadline to file taxes is Monday. Professional tax preparer Wesley Humphreys said there's still time.

“With electronic filing, it's very easy to get the return done as long as they have all their documents together,” Humphreys said.

Humphreys said there were some changes from last year.

“In general, tax rates went down three percent, so people should be paying less tax, even though their refund may be less,” he said, “child tax credit went from $1,000 to a maximum of $2,000.”

They also increased the standard deduction. Humphreys said doing your taxes yourself is fine, but they can get very complex, depending on your circumstances.

“If you have something above and beyond the normal,” he said, “you could get yourself in trouble sometimes.”

Taxpayer Jeff Lawson said his tax returns are sometimes hundreds of pages.

“I'm looking forward to the day when we can send it in one piece of paper but who knows?”

Humphreys said if you can't make it by Monday, you can file for a six-month extension if you owe money, but it's different if you're getting money back.

“If you're getting a refund, you're never late,” he said, “even if you don't ask for an extension.”
