Volusia man dead after exchanging gunfire with deputies

A man was found dead inside his home after exchanging gunfire with Volusia County Sheriff's deputies Monday night.

Deputies responded to a call on Plantation Drive near Ormond Beach about a 38-year-old man who was threatening to kill himself. According to a press release, the man was said to have a gun shop inside the house with access to numerous firearms. The man’s wife and three children were in the house at the time.

The wife took the children through a window, escaping to some nearby woods to seek protection.

At about 10:17 p.m., police say the man opened fire, with two deputies returning fire. The man was confirmed dead at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been brought in to investigate, which is customary in deputy-involved shootings. Per the press release, it's still not known whether the man shot himself or died from the return fire from the deputies.
