UCF health center offering drug that helps prevent HIV
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - The University of Central Florida's health center has begun offering a drug that helps prevent an HIV-negative person from becoming infected with the virus. The Orlando Sentinel reports the university is joining a number of schools that are beginning to offer pre-exposure prophylaxis, commonly referred to as PrEP.
The drug being used is called Truvada. It's only effective if taken daily and at the same time. Medical director of UCF Student Health Services Dr. James Schaus says the drug is now incorporated into the center's routine practices. The health center began offering the drug in January after it started training its staff last year.
