Toddler dead, 2 adults in critical condition after shooting

The Melbourne Police Department (MPD) is investigating a Friday night shooting at a home that left a 2-year-old dead and two adults critically injured. Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the MPD at (321) 608-6450 or to call Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.

A 2-year-old child is dead, and two adults are in critical condition, following a Friday night shooting at a home in Melbourne, police say. 

What led to the deadly shooting?

What we know:

According to the Melbourne Police Department (MPD), officers responded to reports of a shooting at 10:51 p.m. Friday at a residence on the 900 block of Poplar Lane.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found three gunshot victims inside the home: two adults and a toddler. 

Officials say the adults were taken to the hospital in critical condition. However, the child died at the scene of the shooting. 

The child and the two adults are related, according to police. 

What's next:

Investigators have not yet released any details on the events that could have led up to the shooting, information about a possible suspect or the identities of those hurt in the shooting.

‘This is too much’

The incident has shocked the quiet community, highlighting concerns about safety and the impact of violence on families. Residents of the neighborhood say such violence in the neighborhood is unprecedented. Neighbors are expressing shock and sadness, particularly due to the involvement of a child.

"Oh yeah, this is too much, man," Eric Cassells, a neighbor, said. 

"It's tragic," neighbor Genice Brown agreed. "Especially, you know, when a child is involved. You know, that's off limits. Definitely praying for the family and their recovery. And, that poor child. So sad. We got to do better."
