Suspect sought in Sanford drive-by shooting
SANFORD, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Sanford Police are investigating after they say a 16-year-old boy was shot in the head while lying in his bed after a bullet came flying through his window.
Family members have identified the victim as Shaun Merrill Jr. They say he’s in stable condition.
According to investigators, someone inside a vehicle fired several shots at the home on Little Fox Circle just after midnight Monday.
“I was lying down and I just heard, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop!' and I had just hit the floor,” said a neighbor in a call to 911 released by police.
Merrill’s father, Shaun Merrill Sr., says he started looking around the house after he heard the gunfire to make sure everyone was alright.
“My daughter cut on the light, that's when I seen the blood come out of his head, he got hit in the head,” he explained.
The teen is a student at Winter Springs High School and plays on the basketball team. Classmates were shocked to hear about the shooting Monday.
“When you think of Shaun, you don't ever think of that. Shaun, he's a good kid, that didn't seem real,” said friend and fellow basketball player Javian Felton. “We’re all praying for him,”
Investigators say they’ve obtained surveillance video but they are still working to provide a description of the car. No arrests have been made.
