A 27-year-old man has been arrested in New York on a charge of attempted murder in connection to the shooting of a woman at a bus stop in Orange County, Florida, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Kevin Millares, 27, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on Tuesday, June 23, OCSO said. He is being held at Rikers Island in New York, awaiting extradition to Florida, the sheriff's office said.

Woman shot three times in back while on daily walk

The backstory:

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. on June 8 at a bus stop on Egan Drive in Orange County. Deputies responded and found a woman in her 70s with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to the hospital.

Sheriff John Mina told FOX 35 previously that the woman was expected to survive.

According to the arrest warrant, the woman told deputies that she was on her daily walk around her neighborhood when she noticed someone she did not know walking towards her.

"While near the bus stop, she turned around to walk away from the male and he continued walking towards her and shot her three times in the back," the report said. "She is not familiar with the male and was unsure of the reasoning for the shooting."

A man, described as a witness, told deputies that he saw a suspicious male walking around the neighborhood and went inside to get his gun. When he came out, he saw the man shoot the woman three times, the report said.

He told deputies he did not hear either of them say anything prior to the shooting. The man then ran away after the shooting.

Deputies found three shell casings at the scene.

Reports: Suspect lived down the street

Shortly after the shooting, law enforcement went to a home nearby. It was not clear at the time whether that investigation was related to the shooting.

The arrest report and court documents reveal that the suspect, Kevin Millares, bought that home in October 2025. His mortgage company filed a lawsuit against him alleging that he stopped paying his mortgage in December 2025.

According to the arrest report, surveillance footage captured Millares walking down the street. Several neighbors and a realtor identified Millares as the suspect people were looking for.

Law enforcement and SWAT surrounded his home on June 8. However, Millares was not inside, the report said.

Inside the house, deputies found one bullet inside of a magazine on top of the microwave and ammunition inside a kitchen drawer. In a bedroom, deputies found a black pair of shorts and black and white slides, which allegedly matched the clothing the person wore in the surveillance video.
