DELAND, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A school in DeLand was placed on lock down early Friday afternoon while police officers assisted the Volusia County Sheriff's Office in a search for a suspect wanted out of New Smyrna Beach.
Authorities said the suspect had barricaded inside a home on South Delaware Avenue. The suspect surrendered to authorities shortly before 3 p.m.
Nearby Starke Elementary School was placed on lock down, but students were expected to be dismissed at their normal release time at 3:05 p.m.
Students who ride the bus and are normally picked up by parents are being released on the north side of the campus and all traffic will be directed north of the school. Children who normally walk home to school will remain on campus as officials attempt to get parents to pick them up.
