Suspect accused of shooting Brevard Co. deputy in jail

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect involved in the shooting of Agent Casey Smith was arrested Wednesday.

Officials say 65-year-old John Frankin Derossett has been charged with three counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer.

Derossett was transported to the Brevard County Jail Tuesday night where he is currently being held with No Bond.

The investigation revealed that Agents Smith, Jason Roberts and Peter Stead were involved in a criminal investigation involving a complaint of prostitution August 20th.

Officials say during the investigation, arrangements were made to meet a suspect at her home on Covina Street in Port St John.

Deputies say Derossett was inside the home and was seen at the doorway with a handgun and began firing on the agents.

Investigators say the suspect hit Agent Smith and exchanged gunfire with Derossett.

Officials say Agent Smith is recovering at the hospital in serious condition.
