Superintendent accused of using her own health insurance to get care for sick student has resigned

ELWOOD, Indiana (Fox 32 News) The school superintendent who was arrested for using her health insurance to get medical care for a sick student has resigned.

Casey Smitherman resigned from her job with Elwood Community Schools on Friday, reported the IndyStar.

Smitherman allegedly took a 15-year-old student to an emergency clinic to be treated for a sore throat. She had the boy use her son's name, and he was prescribed an antiobiotic, according to prosecutors.

She is charged with felony fraud.
