Students who want to play sports in Brevard County may require a heart check

Kids in Brevard County who want to play sports might soon be required to have their hearts checked.

The county school board has agreed to move forward with a measure that would require EKG tests for student athletes.

The tests can detect diseases like heart murmurs, or other defects.

Just last week, a 10th grade student at Viera High School collasped from cardiac arrest during ROTC training.

"96 percent of heart ailments are missed on your routine school physicals. I  know it is an issue that is near and dear to our hearts. You're literally going to be saving lives."

The school board still has to formally vote on this, but is confident that it will pass.
