Remembrance ceremony held for the three victims of the 1984 courthouse shooting
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Thursday marks 35 years since two bailiffs and a corrections officer were shot at the Orange County Courthouse.
On January 10th, 1984, there was terror at the Orange County courthouse. A man scheduled for a disorderly conduct hearing smuggled in a gun and went on a shooting rampage.
Before the gunman was taken down, Bailiff William Arnie Wilkerson was shot and killed. Two others, Bailiff Harry Dalton and Corrections Officer Mark Parker, were critically shot. Both passed years later due to complications from their shooting injuries.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office took time on Thursday morning to honor their lives. A flag was raised and a wreath was presented on the steps of the courthouse.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina says that he was in the police academy when the shooting happened.
Security at the courthouse was revamped this tragic incident.
The man behind the shooting, Thomas Provenzano, was found guilty of the shooting and sentenced to death. He was executed in 2000.
