Polk weathers Hurricane Matthew

When the sun rose on Friday and residents peeked out their doors to check out the  destruction from overnight, most people were amazed.  High gusty winds from Hurricane Matthew did very little damage.

The worst seemed to be on Blake Avenue in Auburndale.  A massive oak came toppling down onto three vehicles in Bernice O'Connor's front yard.

"It's scary," she told FOX 13. "It could have come down over the house."

Friday, Parks and Recreation workers cut up the branches that were blocking the road, then moved onto to deal with another fallen tree a few blocks away.

Other trees around the county fell, but did not cause many problems.

About 4,000 residents in Winter Haven, Auburndale, Haines City, and Lake Wales lost power overnight. It had been restored in most cases by early morning.

"I am thankful for that," offered Auburndale employee Danny Harrison, who's weathered a lot of storms.
