The owner of the Dallas dog that was rescued while standing guard over his dead canine friend has been found.

Dallas Animal Service said the owners of the 3-year-old Great Pyrenees came forward Tuesday evening and provided proof of ownership.

They said his name is Brian. He was not chipped, but the city said the owners agreed to have that done before getting him back.

Brian was found standing guard over another dog that had been hit by a car and killed near the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery on Sunday. The photos went viral.

Brian's family told Dallas Animal Services that they also owned the deceased dog, Marley. Brian and Marley were daily companions.

The owner said the dogs ran out unexpectedly on Saturday when the garage door was opened.

“Our condolences to the family on the loss of Marley, but we are happy that at least Brian will be going home soon. Thanks to everyone involved,” Dallas Animal Services said.
