New calls for Confederate monument removals in St. Augustine
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) - A meeting has been called to discuss the removal of Confederate monuments in downtown St. Augustine.
The St. Augustine Record reports that the Rev. Ron Rawls of St. Paul AME Church on Monday called for leaders in America's oldest city to remove two monuments to the Confederacy that sit in the popular tourist city's downtown square.
The monuments share space with memorials to civil rights activists.
The discussion in St. Augustine follows the removal of a Confederate statue in Gainesville and discussions in other Florida cities over whether to remove the statues and monuments.
A renewed interest in removing the symbols comes after violent clashes at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, left one dead and scores injured.
