Mom reports son to police to face grand theft charge

Images from a Sanford subdivision showed a pair of teenagers accused of burglarizing a house. After police put the pictures on social media, a mother of the boys saw it and turned her son into authorities.

“I applaud her, because I would do the same thing,” said Nicole Surjit, a neighbor of the victim.

Sanford police officers say they nabbed 18-year-old Izaiah Morales and his alleged 15-year-old partner-in-crime after they say the pair robbed a house in a Sanford subdivision. Police say someone spotted the suspects walking down the street, carrying two large duffel bags, and holding a rifle.

Surjit said they’d had problems with people jumping the wall between their neighborhood and the next one over.

“We've had issues with kids jumping over this fence - the brick fence. Using it as their pathway to come from that neighborhood over here.”

She added that the teen's mom did the right thing.

“I tell my children that all the time. Listen, if you do something and you know it's wrong and you know it's what we've taught you not to do, I have no problem turning you in. So, I applaud her, I'm sure it was a hard thing to do, but you gotta do what you gotta do.”

The duo is charged with armed burglary and grand theft.
