Many express frustration over SunPass backlog

Some drivers say they're not getting any answers from SunPass, after receiving big bills online.  For many, the cost to use SunPass is taking a toll on drivers.

"It seems like there's inaccuracies and discrepancies in the bill when I see it," says driver Joe Martini.

It all started back in June, as the Florida Department of Transportation was trying to merge the billing systems from different highways, under one umbrella. According to FDOT, the vendor Conduent failed to properly transition the payments, so over 200 million tolls went unprocessed.

While the state says all the transactions were processed and accounts updated, drivers say they're still having issues. We asked FDOT about the problems, but they simply said drivers should call customer service. The drivers we talked to told us, they called but didn't get the answers they were looking for.

"This is a big big problem," said Rep. Robert Asencio, "We're still waiting for DOT to comply. We want a copy of the contract."

Asencio says drivers aren't sure if they're account balances are accurate and say they're having issues paying the bills.

"A debit from people's accounts has in some cases caused peoples accounts to be shut down and overdrawn."

He says someone should be held accountable for the mishap.

"We should call for a select committee to be created, where we can look into what exactly occurred here. Identify where the problem was and make the corrective changes so we make sure that we protect the Florida taxpayers from this ever happening again."

The Governor has also proposed an investigation and says late fees and penalties will be waived. Drivers hope the problem is fixed soon.

"As long as they make it right its fine. You have to keep an eye on things now, we tend to feel safer with this technology when it's not. So you really have to keep an eye on it," Martini adds.

Rep. Asencio says he hopes to see the billing cleared up by September or October.
