Lt. Gov. Nunez nixes potential senate bid

Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez on Tuesday formally withdrew as a potential candidate for a South Florida Senate seat, according to the state Division of Elections website.

Nunez, a former House member, opened a campaign account in 2017 as an initial step toward running in 2020 in Senate District 39, which is made up of Monroe and Miami-Dade counties. The seat will be open next year because Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, faces term limits.

Now-Gov. Ron DeSantis last year chose Nunez as his running mate, and the pair won the November election. But Nunez had kept open the Senate campaign account.

In a short letter Tuesday to the Division of Elections, Nunez said she was withdrawing her candidacy in the Senate district. Nunez had raised $200,950 for the race as of March 31 and had spent $84,781, finance totals show.
