Fiery, multi-vehicle crash shuts down SR 44 near Eustis
EUSTIS, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Flames swallowed up cars in Eustis after a high-speed wreck brought traffic to a stop on State Road 44 on Thursday morning.
“It happened in a split second,” Hayden McCormick said. “The truck’s going in the air. I tried to veer off the road and I smashed into one. Everything after that was probably the closest to hell I’ve ever seen.”
Three cars caught fire. One victim was trapped inside.
“I could hear him screaming,” McCormick said.
Struggling to get out of his own car, McCormick and a Good Samaritan jumped into action.
“He was on fire and we were pulling so hard it was insane,” McCormick said. “With adrenaline I felt like I could almost lift the truck up.”
While the truck was engulfed in flames they were able to get him out.
“Pray to God he’s alright,” he said.
Two victims were flown to nearby hospitals lucky to be alive.
Two people were flown out from the scene. The road has reopened.
