Family survives boat crash on Indian River
COCOA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - After an hour-long search, a toddler in an overturned boat in the Indian River was found alive after staying afloat in a small pocket of air.
Cocoa police responded Friday night around 10:40 p.m. after the boat carrying the family of four crashed.
Four officers jumped into the water to rescue the family, with help from bystanders who were in their boat nearby, officials said.
Police said the two adults and one infant were found, but a 23-month-old girl was still missing.
The search continued for an hour before she was found. Two officers said they found the girl trapped underneath the overturned boat, staying afloat in a small pocket of air.
The child was quickly taken to paramedics who were waiting on shore, officials said. She was wearing a life jacket and was in good condition, police said.
The family was taken to the hospital to be checked out, officials said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is investigating.
