Deputies: Woman shot in leg during fight over gun
DELTONA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A Volusia County man is in custody and a woman hospitalized after shots were fired during a fight over a rifle inside a minivan at a home in Deltona, authorities say.
The man, Denzel Donald, 24, returned Tuesday to the home to retrieve his girlfriend’s belongings when a group of people confronted him about an unrelated incident. Donald told detectives he felt threatened so he attempted to get his rifle to defend himself. That’s when the victim, a 41-year-old mother of one of those confronting the suspect, fought with him over the gun, deputies say.
The woman ended up being struck by a bullet in her right leg. In addition, a 2-year-old girl was a passenger in the van but was not injured.
The victim was taken to Central Florida Regional in Sanford with injuries considered non-life-threatening.
Donald was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail where he is being charged with one count of aggravated battery; four counts of aggravated assault and one count of child neglect. Donald is still being processed at this time. Bail information will be released later.
