Paramedic, patient in 'critical' condition after ambulance truck crash in Polk County

Four people were injured Monday night in a two-vehicle crash involving an ambulance and a pickup truck, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

What we know:

The crash happened at the intersection of U.S. 27 and State Road 544 near Winter Haven around 8:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8.

The ambulance was traveling west on SR 544 out of Haines City to Winter Haven Hospital with a patient on a gurney in the back, the sheriff's office said. The ambulance driver reportedly looked both ways before entering an intersection, but the driver of Ford, who was pulling a trailer, entered the intersection at a high speed, deputies said. 

The Ford hit the ambulance on the right side, redirecting the ambulance approximately 60 feet southwest.

A Polk County ambulance was hit by a truck speeding through an intersection, the sheriff's office said Dec. 8. 

Who was hurt? 

Three people, a driver and two passengers, were in the Polk County Fire Rescue ambulance at the time of the crash, according to authorities. 

All three people were taken to hospitals. The patient in the ambulance was thrown from his seat and suffered significant injuries, the sheriff's office said. The paramedic, who was in the back of the intersection with the patient, is also in critical condition. 

The ambulance driver was released from the hospital. The pickup truck driver was also taken to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, the sheriff’s office said. 

According to the sheriff’s office, the ambulance’s emergency lights were flashing at the time of the crash. 

Due to the investigation, southbound US Hwy 27 was closed for five hours.

What we don't know:

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
