How car recalls get reported

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) officially start car recalls after receiving complaints from consumers.

Nearly 20,000 children’s handwriting practice kits have been recalled after federal safety officials found that the pens included in the sets contained unsafe levels of lead, posing a potential health risk to users.

The recall was announced Feb. 26 by the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission.

Children’s handwriting practice kits recalled

By the numbers:

According to the CPSC, the recall affects about 19,700 units of TheKiddoSpace Print and Cursive Handwriting Kits.

The pens in the kits were found to contain lead levels in the nib, or tip of the pen, that exceeded the federal lead content ban.

Big picture view:

Section 101 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act declares children’s products that contain more than 100 ppm lead in an accessible component to be a banned hazardous substance.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause serious health problems, including developmental delays and other adverse health effects.

Two types of kits affected

Dig deeper:

The recall covers two different versions of TheKiddoSpace-branded handwriting practice kits sold with or without a carrying case.

The block handwriting kits include four reusable practice books featuring animal images on the covers: an alphabet book with a bunny, a numbers book with a frog, a math book with a cow and a drawing book with an elephant. The kits also include black pens, colorful pen grips in blue, green, yellow, purple, pink and red, and pen refills.

The cursive handwriting kits include three reusable books – letters, words and sentences – with an image of an open book on the cover. These kits also come with black pens, colorful pen grips and pen refills.

Both versions display the TheKiddoSpace logo and either "Handwriting Practice Kit" or "Cursive Practice Kit" on the blue-and-white book covers and storage box.

The recalled products were sold at TheKiddoSpaceStore.com and Amazon.com from February 2024 through February 2025 for between $25 and $50. No injuries have been reported.

Consumers should stop using recalled kits immediately

What you can do:

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled kits immediately and take the pens and refills away from children.
