FOX 32 NEWS - A woman was killed and a man was wounded in an exchange of gunfire Monday afternoon in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.

They were struck when two groups of males exchanged gunfire about 2 p.m. at 106th and State, according to Chicago Police.

Adrianna Mayes, 21, was shot in the chest and died at 2:56 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Mayes, who was not believed to be a target of the shooting, lived nearby in the 10600 block of South State.

Family told FOX 32 that she was a good girl and focused all her attention on raising her daughter who turned one in August.

Neighbors say she was on the sidewalk, holding her baby and talking with an elderly neighbor who was sitting in the front passenger seat of his red car when shots were fired.

"You have the courage enough to be out here just basically to end somebody's life in broad daylight is sad,” said neighbor Patricia Carter.

Evidence markers littered several streets and yards at the scene. The shooting happened just feet from a day care, where the director says five kids were sleeping at the time.

Harold Newton says he heard at least 30 gunshots and rushed outside to help Mayes.

"She was on the ground, I got down, I rolled her over, unzipped her jacket, I saw where she was bleeding and tried to apply some pressure,” Newton said.

He says Mayes wasn't able to speak and was gasping for air. Her baby was on the ground next to her, uninjured but crying.

"Luckily the child is very young, so it's not like she knows what's going on, just hearing a loud noise,” Newton said.

Family members told FOX 32 that Mayes graduated from Whitney Young Magnet High School in 2013.

"We’ve become very callous to it, it's nothing, it's almost like watching it on TV, it's a movie, it's not real - but it is,” newton said.

A 22-year-old man was also shot, police said. He took himself to Roseland Community Hospital with a gunshot wound to the left hand, where he was listed in good condition.

No one is in custody for the shooting.
