Authorities investigate infant death at unlicensed daycare
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — State and local authorities are investigating the death of a baby girl at an unlicensed daycare in Jacksonville.
The Florida Times-Union (http://goo.gl/g6C6rP) reports that 6-month-old Leslie Walker was found unresponsive Thursday. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports that investigators are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
Police say Portia Bentley and her 17-year-old daughter had been caring for eight children in their 1,400-square-foot home. Bentley told police she had gone to a store and left her daughter with the children when the teen found the baby not breathing and called 911.
Florida Department of Children and Families officials say they're also investigating. They say a child-care facility must be licensed if it cares for children from more than one unrelated group.
No charges were immediately filed.
