Authorities identify man killed by deputy in lake

Authorities in Florida have identified a man who was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy after he beat the deputy with an oar in a lake.

Sgt. Fred Jones of the Lake County Sheriff's Office tells local news outlets that 49-year-old Wayne Donald Dorsey was the man killed Tuesday.

The deputy, who has been with the sheriff's office for 12 years, was placed on paid administrative leave.

Dorsey fled from law enforcement after a hit-and-run crash and ended up in a boat in a lake. Jones says that when deputies caught up, Dorsey began to strike a deputy with an oar. The deputy, chest-deep in water, deployed his stun gun but was unable to stop the attack. That's when the deputy shot Dorsey.

Dorsey had previous convictions and was charged last month for not registering as a sex offender.
